Mitchell Stone Honoured with Doug Wintin OAM Award, Reflects on Career and Contributions
After receiving the Doug Wintin OAM Award at the recent NSWRLRA presentation, Mitchell Stone shared his gratitude, emphasising the award’s significance: “The Doug Wintin Award is all about giving back to the association and making contributions throughout the year.” Stone added, “It’s very special to receive this award, especially with all the great names on it dating back decades.”
A unique contribution Stone credits for the award is his “weekly squad joke” tradition. “At the end of every training session, during our stretch-down, we wrap up on a positive note with a laugh. Each squad member takes turns telling a joke, but there’s a catch—if you don’t get the squad laughing, it’s 25 push-ups. No joke at all? That’s 50,” Stone laughed. “It’s just a fun way to bring everyone together and end on a light-hearted note.”
Stone has built an impressive career with over 475 senior-grade matches, including New South Wales Cup, Ron Massey Cup, Sydney Shield, and Jersey Flegg games. He’s officiated multiple grand finals, including those of the Ron Massey Cup and Jersey Flegg, earning respect both on and off the field.
Now 41, Stone plans to continue his refereeing career, balancing it with his role as a school teacher. “The school schedule aligns well with officiating on weekends, and the holidays help,” he explained. “I’m still fit for it, so I’ll go as long as I can—unless they tell me otherwise,” he added with a grin. Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Stone said, “My focus is to be ready for pre-season, healthy, fit, and in shape. I aim to be reliable and consistent.”
Stone’s dedication and leadership are clear as he looks forward to more years of supporting and inspiring his squad.

Recognised, celebrated and supported by officiating legends of the game is so incredibly rewarding and humbling.” When asked about his most memorable experiences officiating grade games, he shared, “My best memories of running in NSW were participating with officials from all districts and disciplines.
