Bernie’s journey with the Association began in 1998. Over the past 26 years, he has played multiple roles, contributing significantly to the development and success of the refereeing community. His impact on the sport has been profound, influencing countless officials and players throughout his tenure.
In 2005, Bernie took a pivotal step in his career by joining the NSW Junior Reps system. During his time with the Junior Reps, Bernie officiated numerous games, building a reputation for his skill, consistency, and reliability on the field. A highlight of this period was his appointment as a touch judge for the Harold Matthews Grand Final, a prestigious role that highlighted his growing influence within the refereeing community. Bernie continued to officiate at this level until 2009, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication.
Reflecting on his journey, Bernie expressed disbelief at reaching this milestone, saying, "I can't believe that I've done that many games; it seems like I only started yesterday. I've pretty much loved every minute of it."
Following his tenure with the Junior Reps, Bernie transitioned into a training role from 2010 to 2013, where he shared his extensive knowledge and experience with up-and-coming officials. His mentorship proved invaluable, with many of those he coached advancing to join the NRL and NSWRL High Performance Squads. Bernie’s impact as a trainer extended beyond the technical aspects of the game; he was instrumental in instilling a sense of confidence and discipline in his trainees, essential traits for success at the highest levels of rugby league.
Beyond his roles as an official and trainer, Bernie holds a unique record within the Parramatta district for the most appearances as a touch judge in the grand final of the district’s top game. Bernie has officiated in 10 grand finals, with an extraordinary streak of nine consecutive appearances from 2004 to 2012. His consistent performance in these high-stakes matches has earned him the respect of his peers and a place alongside some of the most notable referees in the game, including Gavin Reynolds, Philip Sung, Stephen Ellison, and Kasey Badger.
When asked about his experience with the Parramatta Referees, Bernie highlighted the camaraderie and friendships he has made, saying, "Everything but in particular the camaraderie and friendships made."
In recognition of his outstanding service, Bernie was awarded life membership to the Parramatta Referees Association in 2010, becoming life member #64. This honor reflects the high esteem in which he is held by the Association and the lasting impact of his contributions.
Further acknowledging his exceptional dedication, Bernie has been twice awarded the prestigious Darkie McCall Award, first in 2009 and again for the 2022 season. The William ‘Darkie’ McCall Award is presented annually to a member who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and service to the Association over the previous year. Recipients of this award are chosen based on their attendance, improvement, demeanor, and special acts, making Bernie’s dual recognition a testament to his ongoing contributions to the community.
Bernie’s excellence in coaching was also recognised in 2010 when he was named Kevin Jeffs Coach of the Year. This award honors the legacy of Kevin Jeffs, a Life Member of the Parramatta, NSW, and Australian Referees’ Associations, known for his dedication to developing referees. Bernie’s receipt of this award highlights his pivotal role in shaping the future of refereeing within the district.
Reflecting on the evolution of the Association since he joined in 1998, Bernie noted, "More professionalism as each year passes," underscoring the continuous improvement within the organisation.
In 2018, Bernie’s touch judging skills were further recognised when he was awarded the inaugural Senior Touch Judge of the Year Award. This award was created to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of both senior and junior members of the Association who have demonstrated strong touch judging abilities throughout the season. Bernie’s recognition in this category underscores his technical expertise and consistent performance in this critical role.
In 2020 he was lucky enough to be selected as a touch judge in the NSWRL High Performance, where he would officiate games in Sydney Shield & Ron Massey Cup.
Beyond his on-field achievements, Bernie has always been willing to step up where needed, including taking on the role of Director of Finance in 2016. His leadership and organisational skills have been invaluable in managing the financial aspects of the Association, ensuring its stability and growth.
Bernie’s service to the Parramatta Referees Association extends to his involvement on various committees and the coaching panel over many years.
